Website Snapshots – Including WordPress Snapshots, Backups & Rollbacks

How it helps you

"As a web developer, I want to create a complete snapshot before every major update or experiment on my web projects – whether WordPress, PHP, Laravel, or any other CMS, so that I can reliably back up all files and databases and restore them with just a few clicks if needed. This allows me to safely test new features, plugins, or system updates and immediately roll back to a stable state in case of issues."

With the Snapshot feature in MAMP PRO, you can create complete project snapshots – including all files and databases. This technology works for any website, whether you want to create a WordPress snapshot or a backup/rollback for a PHP or Laravel project.

The Snapshot feature saves the current state of a site (files and database) – independent of the CMS you use. It’s perfect before major changes, as a checkpoint during development, or as a quick rollback solution. If something goes wrong, you can restore the snapshot in seconds.

Why It Matters

With the Snapshot feature in MAMP PRO, you can back up any type of website – whether WordPress, PHP, Laravel, or static – with a single click, create backups, document project milestones, and perform quick rollbacks when needed. This lets you create not only safe WordPress snapshots but also reliable backups for all your web projects.

Best Practices for Website & WordPress Snapshots

  • Before every update: Always create a current snapshot – whether for WordPress, PHP, or other systems.
  • Use clear naming: YYYY-MM-DD – Description (e.g. 2025-09-05 – Before WooCommerce Update).
  • Clean up regularly: Delete old snapshots to save storage space.

Requirements

  • MAMP PRO 7 (or newer) is installed.
  • A site already exists (e.g., a WordPress, PHP, or Laravel project) that you want to back up using a snapshot.

Step-by-Step Guide for Snapshots

1) Create a Snapshot

  1. Select the site in the Sites list.
  2. Create a snapshot via:
    • Control-click (right-click) on the site → “Create Snapshot”
    • Or use the “Site” menu“Create Snapshot”
  3. Enter a name (e.g. 2025-09-05 – Before WordPress Update) and optionally add a note.
  4. Confirm.

MAMP PRO now creates a new snapshot and stores it in the Snapshots folder – whether it’s a WordPress site or any other type of project.

2) Locate Snapshots

  • All snapshots are stored in the “Snapshots” folder inside your project directory.
  • Right-click the site and choose “Show Snapshots in Finder” to open the folder.

3) Restore a Snapshot (Rollback)

  1. Control-click (right-click) on the site or open the “Site” menu.
  2. Select “Restore from Snapshot…”.
  3. Select the desired snapshot and confirm.
  4. MAMP PRO restores both files and database to that snapshot state – a full rollback for any type of website.

Note: Restoring a snapshot will overwrite the current state. Create a new snapshot of your current setup if needed before restoring.

4) Delete Snapshots

  • Open the Snapshots folder (right-click the site → “Show Snapshots in Finder”).
  • Delete any snapshots you no longer need.
